Muscari from FAM Flower Farm

Aren’t those muscari just beautiful? Muscari are also called grape hyacinth and you find them in different colours, like blue, white and pink. Our favourite is the Pink Sunrise: a muscari in a unique pink colour. Wonderful to combine with other bulbs for beautiful colour in your garden.

The beautiful blue grape

You won't be surprised why the muscari is also called grape hyacinth. After all, its flowers look just like little bunches of grapes. They are among the first bloomers in spring (March, April and May) and make your garden look fantastic even when the rest of nature is still hibernating. And did you know that the grape hyacinth is not only breathtakingly beautiful, but also super easy to maintain? Ideal!

Planting grape hyacinths

Even if you don't have a green thumb, you can easily plant grape hyacinths. Place the muscari in a spot in the sun or semi-shade. Planting is done in 4 steps:

1. Dig a hole 2-3 times as deep as the height of the bulb.
2. Pierce the bulb into the hole with the tip pointing upwards. Plant the grape hyacinths about 10 cm apart.
3. Cover the bulbs with soil again.
4. Give your newly planted muscari bulbs some water to keep the soil nice and moist.

How to care for muscari

The beautiful muscari requires some care and the good news is that it isn’t very intensive. With a few simple actions, you can make sure they look tiptop and even multiply. The most obvious is, of course, watering the muscari. You only need to water them when the soil feels dry. Too much water is not good, so it's best to be sparing. Of course, you don't want the roots to rot. What is also important is to cut away the dead flowers. That way, the bulb's energy can go towards new growth. Do you want to let the blue grapes overwinter? Then provide a layer of mulch in autumn. They can take a beating, but this will protect them from the worst frosts.

Mix & match with a grape hyacinth

Grape hyacinths are great to combine with other early bloomers, such as tulip bulbs and daffodils, to create a colourful flower paradise. That way, your garden will be in bloom as early as (from) early spring. Do you want your garden to bloom all year round? Then supplement your garden with flower seeds and dahlia tubers. This way, you also transform your garden into a picking garden, so you can always have fresh flowers in your home.
